This weekend, we\’re recognizing the young men and women of Salem graduating from high school. I take this opportunity to welcome you as your pastor, and in one particular case, your dad.
Ten defining moments, seven critical choices and five pivotal people. Our lives are indelibly marked by relatively few factors, a popular psychologist suggests. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one commencement address, in this season of graduations, isn’t drawn from this intriguing assertion. As you contemplate your significant moments, choices and people to this point, allow me to share three I don’t think you can omit from the list.
The ONE most defining moment was at your conception. In the blink of an eye you were given value, identity, and purpose. ”For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother\’s womb. Psalm 139:13.
The ONE most critical choice wasn’t even yours. You were chosen to reveal God to the world. For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” Ephesians 1:4
The ONE pivotal person in your life laid down His so you can go out and heal the world for all the right reasons. Jesus never graduated high school and is unwelcome on most college campuses today, but He did more to resolve hatred, bigotry and intolerance over one weekend than any protest or demonstration ever will. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17
I look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend!
