What is Easter and Holy Week?

Holy Week is the week leading up to Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar. It is a period of intense reflection, prayer, and commemoration of the events that occurred during the final week of Jesus Christ's earthly life, particularly focusing on his passion, death, and resurrection.

  • Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, where we celebrate and remember the triumphant entry of  Jesus into Jerusalem.  This kicks of the Holy Week that will ultimately lead to an even bigger celebration on Easter.  When Jesus rode into Jerusalem that Sunday they worshiped Him as king.  We similarly get to sing and shout Hosanna’s in worship of our king knowing that He has saved us from sin and death.
  • Maundy Thursday is where we take a special look at the Last Supper that Jesus had with his disciples before His death and resurrection.  This is where He instituted an opportunity for us to  receive forgiveness and commune with Him and all believers though simple bread and simple wine.  This service will be outdoors (weather permitting) and a dinner is available as well.  It will be a simpler style of service but be sure to bring a lawn chair and invite a friend!
  • Good Friday is the Friday before Easter, when we walk through the Gospels and remember what took place at Jesus’ crucifixion.  We also will focus on what makes that Friday so “Good”. It’s because that is when Jesus took upon on the sin of the world upon Himself, even though He had committed no sin, to give us access back to the Father and Eternal Life. This service takes place in the evening and tends to be morose and darker in tone.  We dismiss the service in silence anxiously awaiting the joyous opportunity 3 days later to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection!
  • Easter Sunday is one of the biggest celebrations of the year! We celebration the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His ultimate victory over sin, death, and the devil. Because of His resurrection we are now fully forgiven and have the gift of eternal life with Him. At our Easter services we get to sing and shout Hallelujahs, as well as declaring that He is Risen indeed!

This Year's Devotional

What a privilege it is to read God’s Word and gain strength from it!

This devotional resource was written by various staff members at Salem. It is a collection of Bible passages from 1 Corinthians and thoughts centered on our theme for Lent —“Empty.”

The early Christian church at Corinth needed constant reminders not to chase the things of this world that would ultimately leave them feeling empty. Maybe we’re not much different in today’s world.

Commit to the five minutes a day needed to read these short devotions. Our hearts and minds struggle with an emptiness that can only be
filled by the grace of our God. We pray that the truth of His Word pours redeeming love all over you now throughout this season leading up to Easter. May these words point you to the eternal hope we have through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

One other note: Sundays are not included in the forty-day Lenten journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter. We look forward to sharing God’s Word with you at 9 or 10:30 am in person or online at 10:30 am (live.salem4u.com) each and every Sunday.
