Salem believes that we are called to be bold and share the Gospel both locally and around the world!
Jesus invites all of us, no matter our age, imperfections and all, to boldly step out of our comfort zones and take a risk to try new things and go to new places and He said He would go with us and be with us forever. In our mission teams, we engage together in following Jesus’ example of “loving your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:27) and “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
Local missions include disaster relief and 3rd Ward of Houston.
Heart for Texas
Formed one month after Hurricane Harvey, Heart for Texas has benefitted hundreds of area families with muck-out, rebuilding, furniture replacement, and relational/spiritual support. Even though Harvey is now back page news to some, there are still so many people who have needs:
* people for whom the FEMA check was not enough
* people who were taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors
* people who were living on the edge even before the storm
Heart for Texas has partnered with Jim McIngvale (Mattress Mac) of Gallery Furniture to replace furniture in flood victims’ homes. We meet at the warehouse to load, deliver, and assemble furniture for flood victims in the Houston area. This work is performed during the week on a small scale, but large-scale deliveries are done on the third Saturdays of each month, beginning at 8am at the warehouse and going until the work is done. Contact Laurie Holleway for more information.

Kenya | Vision For Africa
We have teams that provide medical and vision clinics as well as a team that delivers mosquito nets to help end malaria.
Our teams began traveling to Kenya in 2007 and have conducted missions all over the country. Now, Vision for Africa is sponsoring a combined vision and malaria team in Migori, in the far western part of Kenya. The vision team sets up in a single location conducts a clinic capable of prescribing and making corrective glasses for distance and reading. In most cases, local eye surgeons are retained so that we can perform onsite cataract surgeries. The malaria teams travel house to house, distributing bed nets and sharing the gospel with residents.
Vision for Africa missions take place immediately after the school year, the end of May spilling into the first week of June. Our teams stay in adequate hotels and eat good food while in country; accommodations and menu are pre-selected by team leaders. Participants do NOT need to be a vision professional to have a place on the team – we will train you for your role!
Dates: May 25-June 3, 2019
- Airfare + $800 for Salem members
- Airfare + $1000 for non-Salem members

For over 20 years, Salem continues to share the Gospel through vision, medical, and dental clinics in Honduras.
Heart for Honduras
Heart for Honduras sent its first mission team to Honduras, the fourth poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, in 1996 after learning that blood infection due to tooth decay was a primary cause of death there. In 1998 the group made the commitment to take two teams each year, and as a result Heart for Honduras sends one mission team in February and one in September, sponsoring free medical outreaches for the local population. Each mission group is comprised of a dental team, medical team, and vision team. Since Honduras is so poverty-stricken and their national health care system so overrun, our Heart for Honduras teams see very large crowds, sometimes over 1000 people in a single day. Our teams coordinate with local pastors’ associations, resulting in wholistic physical and spiritual care for the local people attending the clinic.
Our teams stay in good hotels and eat good food while in country; accommodations and menu are pre-selected by team leaders. Participants do NOT need to be a medical/dental/vision professional to have a place on the team – we will train you for your role!
Dates: September 18-25, 2019
Cost: Air Fare + $600 for Salem Lutheran Church members; air fare + $800 for non-Salem members

Salem Student Ministry Honduras Trip
Salem Student Ministry is returning to Honduras on June 17-22, 2019 for a mission trip for our 7th year in a row!
Our mission is to serve the people in Honduras to open doors to sharing the Gospel message in La Paz. This will be done through two service opportunities: hosting a Vision Clinic and engaging at the Compassion Center with children. Our mission is to provide eye care to those in the community of La Paz. Our team will do this by hosting a Vision Clinic that will fit people for distance and reading glasses while giving them the opportunity to see an eye doctor that partners with us. Our students will also have the opportunity to have intentional time to share what they believe with each individual that comes through our clinic. They will learn how to run each aspect of the clinic, from running the eye chart to assembling glasses and talking to their translators to how to start conversations about their faith. Students will also help at the Compassion Center that is located one block from the Vision Clinic site. Students will help with a VBS by assisting with crafts, bible lessons, music, recreation time, etc. Your student will have the opportunity to serve those in need, learn about another culture, make lasting connections with peers at Salem Lutheran Church, and take steps in growing their faith.
Ready To Join The Team?
We hope you join us in our mission to continue to share the Gospel throughout the world.
