Salem believes that we are called to be bold and share the Gospel both locally and around the world!
Local missions include disaster relief and 3rd Ward of Houston.
Heart for Texas
Formed one month after Hurricane Harvey, Heart for Texas has benefitted hundreds of area families with muck-out, rebuilding, furniture replacement, and relational/spiritual support. Even though Harvey is now back page news to some, there are still so many people who have needs:
* people for whom the FEMA check was not enough
* people who were taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors
* people who were living on the edge even before the storm
Heart for Texas has partnered with Jim McIngvale (Mattress Mac) of Gallery Furniture to replace furniture in flood victims’ homes. We meet at the warehouse to load, deliver, and assemble furniture for flood victims in the Houston area. This work is performed during the week on a small scale, but large-scale deliveries are done on the third Saturdays of each month, beginning at 8am at the warehouse and going until the work is done. Contact Laurie Holleway for more information.
Hurricane Michael was the third most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the United States and devastated the communities of Panama City Beach and Mexico Beach, Florida. You’ve seen the pictures, and can see that the damage is much different than we experienced with Harvey: “It’s like a bomb went off!”, one resident said after seeing the aftermath.
Salem Lutheran Church is sponsoring a relief trip November 14-18 to help out in whatever way possible. The mission will involve:
- driving to the Florida panhandle and back in private vehicles
- sleeping on air mattresses in the church, and being responsible for our own meals
- working as directed by local leadership
- restoring the interior flooring of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church/School
- clearing debris outdoors
Contact Kevin Pieper to sign up for the trip.
Third Ward Mission
Salem Lutheran Church partners with a Third Ward church to sponsor “Operation Love” on Saturday, December 8th, 2018. Approximately 300 elementary age students will gather at Blackshear Elementary that morning for our Operation Love program, which includes a presentation of the biblical Christmas story, a hot lunch, and gift giveaway. These area young people come from impoverished homes and are very thankful for this support. Our team is responsible to:
- collect the donated “gently used toys and coats” during the months of November and December
- transport these gifts from Salem to Blackshear early on Saturday morning, December 8
- upon arrival at Blackshear, divide into teams to:
- wrap gifts
- prepare the lunch
- practice the presentation of the Christmas story
- after lunch, clean up and return home
Interested? Contact Kevin Pieper for more information.
We have teams that provide medical and vision clinics as well as a team that delivers mosquito nets to help end malaria.
Vision for Africa
Our teams began traveling to Kenya in 2007 and have conducted missions all over the country. Now, Vision for Africa is sponsoring a combined vision and malaria team in Migori, in the far western part of Kenya. The vision team sets up in a single location conducts a clinic capable of prescribing and making corrective glasses for distance and reading. In most cases, local eye surgeons are retained so that we can perform onsite cataract surgeries. The malaria teams travel house to house, distributing bed nets and sharing the gospel with residents.
Vision for Africa missions take place immediately after the school year, the end of May spilling into the first week of June. Our teams stay in adequate hotels and eat good food while in country; accommodations and menu are pre-selected by team leaders. Participants do NOT need to be a vision professional to have a place on the team – we will train you for your role!
Dates: May 25-June 4, 2019

For over 20 years, Salem continues to share the Gospel through vision, medical, and dental clinics in Honduras.
Heart for Honduras
Heart for Honduras sent its first mission team to Honduras, the fourth poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, in 1996 after learning that blood infection due to tooth decay was a primary cause of death there. In 1998 the group made the commitment to take two teams each year, and as a result Heart for Honduras sends one mission team in February and one in September, sponsoring free medical outreaches for the local population. Each mission group is comprised of a dental team, medical team, and vision team. Since Honduras is so poverty-stricken and their national health care system so overrun, our Heart for Honduras teams see very large crowds, sometimes over 1000 people in a single day. Our teams coordinate with local pastors’ associations, resulting in wholistic physical and spiritual care for the local people attending the clinic.
Our teams stay in good hotels and eat good food while in country; accommodations and menu are pre-selected by team leaders. Participants do NOT need to be a medical/dental/vision professional to have a place on the team – we will train you for your role!
Dates: February 6-13, 2019
