You may have many friends, but which of them do you want to hang around after everyone else leaves? Sometimes it may even be an in-law! Why do you think that is? More than likely, my guess is because they’re encouragers.

Encouragers take you beyond superficial compliments to touch your heart in a way you’ll always remember. Encouragement is the grace of lifting someone up to recognize their God-given gifts. Godly encouragement silences fear and nourishes the soul. It moves us forward and empowers us to tackle the daunting and consider the unconsidered.

As much as we all need encouragement, we also need to encourage. That means conversations are less about us and more about others. Encouragers avoid superlatives and comparatives, focusing more on character, strengths and talents.

Our encouragement of others ultimately reveals more of God’s call to service for them. God doesn’t gift us with traits and talents just for the fun of it. We are endowed with our unique personality, passions and potential according to God’s design and desire.

As Christ followers we know the world turns on God’s encouragement to us in Jesus. One of the most uplifting passages in Scripture is found in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Do you appreciate the value God puts on every human being in these words? If God bought us back from condemnation and death through Jesus’ work, it is only because we are of great value to Him.

We live in a world where it’s easy to be discouraged. Sin corrupts our thinking to believe life has no purpose beyond that which gives us pleasure. Christian encouragement buffs the tarnish off our corroded thinking to remember God gives us gifts for the benefit of others and we benefit by others gifts. Now that’s encouraging!

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is “today,” so that none of you can be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
