“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:14, 16

If someone were to watch you up close and personally for a week, or even just a day, what would they have to say? Would your life give them pause to think or wonder, “Who ARE you?”, or to ask themselves, “Why are you doing that?” ? Would your actions, attitude, mindset match your claim to being a Christian?

Living a Questionable Life means living in such an unexpected and positive way that it makes people stop and wonder why you’re acting the way you do, because it’s not normal. Living questionably means standing out from the crowd. If we’re to reach the world for Jesus, living questionably is not optional.

Move Out of Your Comfort Zone

Most of us are satisfied to live a life that doesn’t rock the boat. We like staying in our lane, and living within the boundaries of what makes life comfortable. Yet, Jesus commanded his followers to live in such a way that the world would be able to pick them out of a crowd. (Matthew 5:14, 16)

To live questionably means we’re willing to risk being different, willing to move out of our comfort zones. This can be scary, but the great news is, that Jesus never leaves us on our own. (Matthew 28:20). What an incredible amount of strength, peace, and encouragement we can draw from this promise!

To Live Questionably = Doing The Unexpected

I recently read this thought,

“Those who don’t behave as expected, challenge those who do.”

Jesus, himself, lived questionably, challenging the norms and comfort zones of the church leaders as well as every day people. His life impacted others because He lived unexpectedly.

How Can We Begin To Live Questionably?

  • know that your life is not your own to live
  • go out of your way to do good for others
  • see the good in people-speak the best of others
  • forgive endlessly
  • promote others over self
  • communicate hope and encouragement
  • give generously and unexpectedly
  • choose grace over all else

The list could go on and on. To live questionably means relying on God’s strength and guidance for wisdom, discernment, discipline and courage as we live intentionally for Him. (Philippians 4:19). Because Jesus lived and loved radically, others were challenged and inspired to do the same. For others to know Jesus, we can no longer conform to the norms of this world (Romans 12:2).

Our lives, like His, must cause others to think. Our lives should make others question their own lives and purpose. Our lives should invite and inspire them to an authentic, vibrant life with our Friend and Savior, Jesus.
